A chest x-8 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean: "Public Policies from a Gender Perspective in Political Participation"


This research "Public Policies from a Gender Perspective to enhance Women's Participation in Power and Decision Making in Latin America and the Caribbean" is developed within the global context of the new millennium, where the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean are embedded the need has arisen to meet existing commitments cultural, social, political and economic that during the course of human history had been kept out, or rather, part of the population: "women "were not parties to participate and protagonists of the processes that involve everyone in a society, making it impossible to achieve real development.

Having taken and understood the situation has become imperative to ensure that women achieve full equality in all spheres of human life.

In this quest, there are significant efforts by the international community, highlighting the Convention of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW, 1979) and mainly at the Fourth World Conference on Women (Beijing 1995), which embodies the strategies to follow Platform of Action in relation to policy formulation and implementation of gender mainstreaming, for governments to incorporate in their actions.

So this way, we find the situation of access to participation in power and decision-making, which is a matter of strategic importance for the advancement of women in society and analyze how research is unfolding the issue through public policy.

General Objective of Research.

Contribute to study the current situation of public policies with a gender perspective to effectively strengthen the participation of women in power and decision-making in the universe selected countries in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Specific Objectives.

To investigate the involvement, commitment and involvement of governments in Latin America primarily in the Convention of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW, 1979) and the Fourth World Summit (Beijing, 1995) in the conciencialización lack of rights women and mainstreaming gender in public policy design.

Observe and analyze the principal institutional strategies of the governments of Latin America that have been created for the formulation of public policies with gender perspective to address social inequalities.

Determine and compare the qualitative and quantitative status of women in Latin America in the process of participation in the exercise of power and decision making as a measure of social justice in democracy in different branches of government.

Define the main findings that raise and hinder women's active presence in the exercise of power and decision-making.

The first chapter shows how the process has been developed to incorporate women's political participation based on the principle of equality and some processes of significance in the history of Latin America and the Caribbean, where it promptly will deepen what actions manifest form of public policies with a gender perspective in the global and regional commitments acquired, how they have evolved and what are the main strategies in achieving equality.

And the second chapter, incorporates an assessment of the real situation of women in some countries of Latin America and the Caribbean in positions of power and decision-making, particularly on indicators relating to the registration of women in the electoral registers, their participation in the various branches of state and local level.
